Stealing Lincoln's Body
by Thomas J. Craughwell (210 pages). This was an interesting book, but the actual story of Lincoln's would-be
tomb robbers is a small part of the book. However, there were a lot of interesting tidbits of information
in the book that made it worthwhile reading:
-
The immediate aftermath of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, his funeral, and family..
-
The origin of the Secret Service in the mid-19th Century, created to stomp out
epidemic-level counterfeiting.
-
The Irish community of Chicago and organized crime centering on counterfeiting rings.
-
The disposition and caring for Lincoln's body from its attempted abduction in 1876, inspection in
1887 and again in 1901, to its final resting in 1901.
The last item in the list above was the most interesting to me. Next time I am in Central Illinois,
I will definitely want to visit the Lincoln Monument.
